Canada's first day of legal Cannabis
Today Canada became the first industrialized nation to have legalized recreational Cannabis. Hundreds of people lined up this morning to celebrate the long-awaited day going up in smoke. While there is an undeniable lack of shops currently open (only one open in all of British Columbia), mail order Cannabis is widely available and was struggling to keep up with demand throughout the day. Canada should quickly emerge as the largest Cannabis market in the world, with research showing last year, even before legalization, 4.9 million Canadians consumed marijuana in some way. Many of the same types of products found across the border at 2020 Solutions in Bellingham, WA will be available including pre-rolled joints, flower, and cannabis oil. Cannabis edibles however, will not be available for another year under the new law and all concentrates and vape juices will remain illegal until the government explores their risks.
Canadians will have the privilege to grow a small amount of plants at home and possess up to 30 grams of dried marijuana in public. Parks Canada recently gave the go-ahead that campers can blaze up at the campsites in National Parks around the country. Additionally, in a change of heart last Tuesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated that Canadians who work in the cannabis industry legally will be permitted to enter the United States for vacation purposes.
Crossing the US/Canada border in either direction with any Cannabis is still highly illegal, so if you’re traveling down to Washington via the Peace Arch, Pacific Highway, Aldergrove, or Sumas crossing leave your stash at home!
